What Is Periodontitis?
Periodontitis is a gum infection that damages the soft tissues in your mouth that surround your teeth. It can lead to pain, swelling, and even tooth loss. A lack of proper dental care usually causes gum disease. Luckily, there are several treatments for periodontitis, which is referred to as periodontal therapy.
What Is Periodontal Therapy?
Periodontal therapy involves any medications or procedures used to treat periodontitis. These are offered in both nonsurgical and surgical treatments. A dentist or periodontist provides periodontal therapy. These experts specialize in gum disease.
Types of Periodontal Therapy
Periodontal therapy aims to provide a deep clean around the soft tissue pockets surrounding your teeth. This reduces the chance of the infection reaching more gum tissue and bone.
If gum disease is in its early stages, your provider will start with nonsurgical treatments. This includes scaling, which removes tartar and bacteria from the surface of your teeth and below the gumline. Another common treatment is root planing. This process involves smoothing the root surfaces of your teeth, preventing more buildup of tartar and bacteria. It’s also common to take antibiotics to control the infection during this time.
Surgical Treatments
Dental surgery may be the answer to treating advanced periodontitis. One common approach is flap surgery, also known as pocket reduction surgery. This is when your provider makes incisions in your gums and carefully folds back the tissue. This allows them to treat the tooth root with scaling and root planing.
Other surgical treatments for gum disease include:
- Soft tissue grafts
- Bone grafting
- Guided tissue regeneration
- Tissue-stimulating proteins
