Dentistry for Kids
Finding high-quality dentistry for kids is not always easy, but you can feel good about the care your child will receive with Dr. Anthony Markiewicz or Dr. David Markiewicz at Markiewicz Dental. Both dentists have the education, skills, and demeanor to treat children and make them feel at ease.
Pediatric Dental Procedures
Like adults, the most basic service we offer children is the bi-annual cleaning and exam. These appointments are especially critical for children because they allow our dentists to track potential oral health issues, such as poor alignment and non-erupting wisdom teeth, and treat them at an appropriate time. Children also need guidance regarding brushing, flossing, and making healthy food choices.
The American Dental Association recommends that children visit a dentist for the first time within six months of their first teeth erupting. Even though your infant or toddler has only a few teeth at this stage, early intervention helps parents learn to care for their child’s oral health until they have the skills and maturity to do it themselves.
Dental Sealants
Dr. Anthony Markiewicz or Dr. David Markiewicz may recommend placing dental sealants on your child’s back molar teeth if they struggle to keep them clean and the teeth are at risk of decay. Of all the teeth in your child’s mouth, the molar teeth have the highest risk of decay because they can be challenging to brush and floss properly.
Dental sealants come in liquid form, and your child’s dentist applies the material directly to the back teeth with a small brush. The substance should dry within a few minutes. Sealants fill in the pits and grooves of the molar teeth, which are difficult to reach with a toothbrush. The sealants also act as a protective barrier to prevent plaque, tartar, and bacteria from causing tooth decay.
Fluoride Treatments
Regular fluoride applications during childhood help strengthen tooth enamel and guard against cavities. Unfortunately, most Americans do not receive enough naturally occurring fluoride to benefit from it.
According to the American Dental Association, fluoride treatments can reduce the risk of cavities by as much as 30 percent. Dr. Anthony Markiewicz or Dr. David Markiewicz recommends fluoride treatments for children at high risk of cavities. Adults who continue to struggle with tooth decay can also benefit from fluoride treatments.
